Sensory Norms Extension (Adults)

Redcap

Interested participants must first complete a demographics / sensory information survey through Redcap. You can view the questions below (due to display logic, not all of the questions will be displayed to all participants, but all are shown in the attached pdf).

Participants can complete the survey at the following url: https://redcap.duke.edu/redcap/surveys/?s=MFA494LE4L8TF8PJ

Eligibility

Eligible participants must be:

  • Deaf (severe or profound in both ears) OR blind (both eyes) before age 3

  • US citizens (to receive gift card)

  • Fluent in English

  • Not scammers

If eligible:

After confirming eligibility, researcher must send an email to the participant containing a unique qualtrics link.

To generate the qualtrics link, first add participants to the Sensory Norms Extension contact list in qualtrics. Only list email and VIHI_ID -- not participants' names.

Click 'Generate Links' button at the top of the page. We want participants to have lots of time to complete this long survey, so set the link to expire in 90 days. You can then select which participants need links.

This will automatically download a .csv with all of the links generated.

Email each participant through Redcap so that the unique link is associated with their demographic information. Enter the Participant List under Survey Distribution Tools, and click Compose Survey Invitations.

Paste the following email template into the body of the email.

Thank you for your interest in our research! It looks like you are eligible for this study, and we would love your help. You may open the survey in your web browser by clicking the link below:

[unique link from qualtrics]

This link is unique to you and should not be forwarded to others. If you take a break from the survey, you can return this link anytime to continue. The link is valid until [expiration date from qualtrics].

The study involves rating English words for how much you associate them with different senses. After rating approximately 30 words, you will earn a $5 Amazon gift card. There are 26 sets of words total, and you can continue rating words to earn more gift cards, if you would like. Feel free to take breaks as you go -- you can return to the study via the link above until [expiration date from qualtrics].

If you have any questions, feel free to respond to this email, and a researcher will get back to you soon. Thank you again for your help!

Before sending, double check that all of the fields in square brackets have been replaced.

Update /Volumes/Fas-Phyc-PEB-Lab/VIHI/SubjectInformation/Surveys/SensoryNorms/UniqueLinks.xlsx before moving on.

If not eligible:

In some conditions, a participant will receive an automatic "not eligible" message from redcap. This will happen if:

  • Participant is not a US citizen

  • Participant is not a fluent English speaker

  • Participant does not identify as Deaf or blind

  • Participant became Deaf or blind after age 3

  • Participant fails the falsification check

Participants could also be ineligible if their sensory impairment is unilateral or mild-moderate. If this is the case, send the following email through Redcap:

Thank you for your time and interest! Unfortunately, it looks like you are not eligible for the present study. However, we are often running new studies. We'll be in touch if there's another study that you might be eligible for!

Payment

Upon completion of one of the word lists, participants will be directed to a separate qualtrics survey to input their email address. Completion of the payment survey will trigger an email to the lab account and to Erin.

If you don't have a p-card: Post a message on Slack in the gift-card-participant-payments channel to let lab staff know that a new VIHI participant is ready for payment

Open /Volumes/Fas-Phyc-PEB-Lab/VIHI/SubjectInformation/General/PaymentTracking.xslx and fill in columns A-F. Sensory Norms participants receive $5 for each list completed.
