# HPP Training in ELAN

## Set-up&#x20;

Download ELAN: <https://archive.mpi.nl/tla/elan/download>

### Trainer:&#x20;

* Set up an .eaf with a video of an old HPP participant, with two tiers: left look and right look

### Trainee:&#x20;

* open your assigned .eaf file.
* Make sure your volume is down so you are not influenced by the auditory stimuli
* Go to Options >> Segmentation mode >> select the following segmentation options (pictured below):
  * "One keystroke per annotation, press to mark start, release to mark end"
  * "Delayed mode: compensate for keystroke delay (ms.)" = 300 ms
  * "Segmentation Key: Enter"&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/krC8Laxwjzev1mV8HzaT" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

* Navigate to the beginning of the video
* Drag the top window down to make your video as big as possible, but make sure you can still see your annotation tiers.&#x20;
* Use the up and down arrow keys to navigate between your codeable tiers-- the one that is selected and that you are currently making segmentations on will appear larger in red on top of the list of tiers.&#x20;
* Press play, and you are ready to start segmenting!
* When the child turns their head to one side or the other, make a segment on the corresponding tier by pressing and holding the enter key while they are looking, and releasing it when they look away. You will have to switch between tiers live (by using the up and down arrow keys)
  * note: this is not identical but similarly paced to the process of coding an HPP study in the Habit software-- in the real deal, we use 4 when they look to the left, and 6 when they look to the right
  * note: **DO NOT** press pause — the whole idea of the training is to get a feel for live coding when you are doing the real-deal HPP coding!
* Practice with several files!&#x20;
