General Summary
My name is [ ] and I’m calling because [ ] is eligible for another study at the Rochester Baby Lab. Would you be interested in hearing about our study, or is this a bad time?
If bad time: when would be a better time to reach you, or would you prefer an email?
Great! So there is actually a short and long version of this project. The short version would involve you coming in with [ ] just once, between 6 and 6.5 months, for an eye tracking study about word learning; it’s the standard 1 hour appointment. Is that something you’d be interested in scheduling some time for?
if they say yes, still tell them about the long version before you schedule them
The long version would involve enrolling [ ] in a year long study, where two researchers from the babylab would come to your house once a month, at a time that works for you, to record what sees and hears using little cameras and recorders, and you’d come into the lab every other month for an eye tracking study.
If you want to do the one-time eye tracking study, or the yearlong study, either way, you’d come in first for the in-lab study, and then if you’re interested in the longer version, we could tell you more about it then. Or, I’m happy to tell you more about either the one-time or yearlong study or have the primary researcher call you, or send you written information if that’s better.
Long Versions
Eye tracker Word Learning Study
Our goal in this study is to get an idea of how well babies learn words. We would present [ ] with different images on a computer, and track where he/she is looking. Your child would see two pictures, for example of a dog and a ball, and would hear “Look at the ball!” or “Where is the dog?” while we track where [ ] is looking. We would use that information to understand how infants recognize objects and learn words over different ages.
The study itself is ~10 minutes, but with paperwork and getting settled, we schedule appointments for an hour and you will be compensated $10 for your time.
For the Seedlings study
Our goal in this project is to collect information about what infants are seeing and hearing in the world around them. Here is what is involved:
We collect audio and video input from babies’ perspective using a small recording device and a headband or hat with two lightweight cameras [22g each, about the size of a crayon]. If you choose to participate, we will come to your house some time that is convenient for you to collect the video footage. We will setup the cameras and make sure everything is all set. At this point, we'll start the recording and leave you to play, have meal time, or whatever you would normally do for about an hour.
The other aspect of the in-home visit is recording [ ]'s auditory input for a day. We will give you a small voice recorder and ask [ ] to wear it for a full day, and leave a couple of shirts with you: the recorder just goes right in the pocket of the shirt. The recorder has special software that can tell us things like how many words and utterances your child heard and how many words were from adults vs. other children. When this part is completed, we will stop by to pick up the recorder at a time that’s convenient for you.
The in-home visits happen once a month, between 6 and 18 months, so 12 visits. Additionally, every other month, you’d come in for a standard eyetracking study, plus some paperwork, so 7 in-lab visits over the year.
If you did all of the in-lab and home visits, you’d be paid $340 over the course of the year.

Dear [ ],
Thank you for the interest in Baby Lab studies! We are in the process for recruiting for a new study conducted here at the Baby Lab and found that [ ] may be eligible. Here are the details:
