# \[PB] Picture Book Lab Visits

## About the Study

***Please read this if you are not familiar with the Picture Book Study!***

**Timeline of the study:**

1. **Pick-up visit** - Family receives the study materials and instructions on how to use them.
2. **Reading period** - Family reads the picture book to their child ***twice a day for two weeks***. Every reading session is recorded using an audio recorder and noted in a reading log.
3. **Main visit** - Use eye-tracking to assess whether the child learned the novel words that are featured in the picture book.

### Materials

**The Picture Book packet should contain the following materials:**

* Instruction sheet (with the first day of reading filled in).
* USB audio recorder and charger.
* Picture Book.
  * Last pages should contain blank reading logs.
  * Back cover page should have 12 flashcards (4 cards for each of the three novel items).

### Audio Recorder

![Notice where the ON/OFF switch is - here, it's on the right end. ](https://3364608434-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-legacy-files/o/assets%2F-LD2B3y86yJyNeihFLqD%2F-LpizM4qGeE7v6SyLDI2%2F-LpjAfzZueoIKqheDa5k%2Fr1.jpg?alt=media\&token=f4679e85-86da-41ac-a6fc-59bdff4e5bcf)

1. Slide the power switch to ON. The light on the recorder will turn ***red***.
2. Once the light turns ***blue***, recording has started. If the light does not turn blue, the recorder needs to be charged.
3. To end the recording, slide the power switch to OFF.

## Pick-Up Visit

To set-up, follow instructions on the laminated lab visit checklist for "PB Pick-Up."

If you've never handled the Picture Book materials before, ***FAMILIARIZE YOURSELF WITH THE MATERIALS BEFOREHAND*** -- especially the [USB audio recorder](https://app.gitbook.com/@bergelsonlab/s/blab/~/drafts/-Lpiw-uIW_flToW3SI_X/primary/lab-visits/pre-and-during-a-lab-visit/picture-book-study#usb-audio-recorder).

### Instructions for Parents

After the parent has signed the consent form, begin taking items out of the Picture Book packet one-by-one (there is no particular order). For each item, explain how the family will be using this item for the next two weeks.

**Here are the key points to communicate about each item:**

* **Instruction sheet.**
  * Contains all instructions for the study and materials.
  * First day of reading is written on the sheet. Do not begin reading until then.
* **USB audio recorder.**
  * Use this to record every reading session.
  * Do a mock demonstration while explaining how to use the recorder.
    * When you slide the power switch to ON, a light on the recorder will turn ***red***.
    * Once the light turns ***blue,*** recording has started. If the light does *not* turn blue, the recorder needs to be charged.
    * To end the recording, slide the power switch to OFF.
* **Charger.**
  * Use this to charge the audio recorder.
  * Do a mock demonstration on how to use it.
* **Picture Book.**
  * Read to your child ***twice a day for two weeks***: once in the morning and once in the evening.
  * The book introduces three new words to your child. We're interested in whether children can learn these new words.
  * After two weeks of reading, we will use eye-tracking to see how much your child has learned from the book.
* **Reading logs.**
  * Located at the back of the book.
  * Log every reading session.
  * Log reading sessions that were skipped. Do your best to not miss reading sessions, but if you do, be sure to log them.
* **Flashcards.**
  * Can be used to make reading more interactive and encourage learning.
  * You and your child can match the cards to the pictures in the book.

## Main Visit

To set-up, follow instructions on the laminated lab visit checklist for "PB Main Visit." The flow of this visit should proceed just like any other eye-tracking lab visit.

**Be sure to collect the Picture Book packet (with all materials inside) before the family leaves.** [See the instructions here for what to do with the Picture Book packet after the visit](https://gitbook.bergelsonlab.com/archive/duke-archive/currently-inactive-study-pages/picture-book-lab-visits).

### Eye-Tracking

Research Assistants can help with eye-tracking by operating the controller.

In using the controller, the goal is to **capture when the parent says the target word** as accurately as possible!

* Press the **green button** at the ONSET of the target word.
* Example: parent says, "Where's the banana?" To capture the target word "banana," press the green button when you hear "the."
