Speaker Codes Cleanup - RAs

When you are assigned a Speaker Codes Cleanup task on Asana, please follow the instructions in the relevant section below.

Changing a code in DataVyu (.opf)

  1. Navigate to the file you want to check (within Subject_Files, in Coding/Video_Annotation). If there is more than one .opf, be sure to use the _final.opf.

  2. Copy and paste the .opf into the appropriate folder Working_Files, creating one if necessary.

    • The directory should look like this: Working_Files/01_06/video

  3. Follow all instructions for the fix_speakercodes script here.

Changing a code in CLAN (.cha)

  1. Navigate to the file you want to check (within Subject_Files, in Coding/Audio_Annotation). Be sure to use the _final.cha.

  2. Copy and paste the .cha into the appropriate folder Working_Files, creating one if necessary.

    • The directory should look like this: Working_Files/01_06/audio

    • If you will need to listen to the audio (e.g. to find out who a speaker is), also copy the .wav. It can be found within Processing/Audio_Files.

  3. Hit Cmd + F to search for the new code to make sure it's not already present in the file.

  4. Hit Cmd + R to open the Replace window.

  5. Enter the old code in the "Replace" field and enter the new code in the "With" field.

  6. Check that everything worked successfully and the speaker codes were properly edited.

  7. Save the file.

Changing a code in a basic level

  1. Navigate to the file you need to fix (see below) and open the .csv.

  2. If you only changed all instances of codes to new - Go to Edit -> Find and search for the new code (that you're changing it to) to make sure it's not already present in the file.

  3. Go to Edit -> Replace. Enter the old code in the "Find what" field and enter the new code in the "Replace with" field.

  4. Check that everything worked successfully and the speaker codes were properly edited.

  5. Save the file.

Which basic level should I use?

  • Fix the basic level in Seedlings/Subject_Files/.../Coding/Analysis/Video_Analysis, called SS_MM_sparse_code.csv

Listening to find out who a speaker is

  1. See Shannon to get any notes you may need.

  2. Navigate to the file you need to check (within Subject_Files, in Coding/Audio_Annotation).

  3. Copy and paste the .cha and the Audio_Coding_Issues into the appropriate folder Working_Files, creating one if necessary.

    • The directory should look like this: Working_Files/01_06/audio

  4. Copy and paste the .wav (within Subject_Files, in Processing/Audio_Files) into the same Working_Files directory.

  5. Now you take on your task. Depending on what it is, you'll probably want to search for the speaker code(s) in question and listen around them. Take notes!

    • Tip: It can be helpful to find where the speaker comes in or leaves, as you're more likely to hear a "Hi Grandma!" or "Bye Susan" then.

  6. Don't spend more than 30 minutes per speaker.

  7. Leave detailed notes in Audio_Coding_Issues.
