Recruitment scripts for calling for Yours/My study (finished recruitment Summer 2018)

Phone Script

Hello, may I speak with []?

My name is [ ] and I’m calling from Duke University because [ ] may be eligible for a study through Duke CHILD Studies. Would you be interested in hearing about our study, or is this a bad time?

If they're not interested: Would you like to be removed from our database so you don't get calls about participating in our studies?

If it’s a bad time: When would be a better time to reach you, or would you prefer an email?

If interested in hearing more: Great! First, I’d like to ask you some questions to confirm the information in our database.

  • Can you confirm your child’s full name is [ ]? Birth date is [ ]?

  • Could you verify your phone number? Email address? Mailing address?

  • Is phone the best way to reach you, or do you prefer email?

  • Was your child born within 3 weeks of their due date?

  • Can you estimate the percent of the time your child hears English in his/her normal environment? (If they sound confused: For example, if they hear half English and half Spanish, that’d be 50%.)

Confirm their info in the DPP if they're at all interested, even if they don't want to schedule an appointment at this time.

If <75% or premature: Thank you so much! [ ] isn’t eligible for this particular study, but we’re always running new studies with different criteria. Our database is updated so we will call you back should he/she be eligible for any active studies with us, if that’s okay with you!

If 75% or more: Great! This study would involve you coming into our lab with [ ] for an eye-tracking study about word learning.

Our goal in this study is to get an idea of how babies learn about the objects around them. To do this, we would have you take pictures of objects in your home and send them to us before you come into the lab for an eye-tracking study.

For the eye-tracking portion, we would present [ ] with different images on a computer screen, and track where he/she is looking. Your child would see pictures, for example of a dog and a ball, and would hear “Look at the ball!” or “Where is the dog?” while we track where [ ] is looking. We would use that information to understand how infants recognize objects and learn words over different ages.

You and your child may complete an assessment and/or a set of questionnaires.

The study itself is about ten minutes, but with paperwork and getting settled, we schedule appointments for an hour. Your family will receive a small child-focused gift for your time, and will be eligible for $5-10 for mileage reimbursement, depending on your travel time.

If you have further questions, I’m happy to tell you more about the project, have the primary researcher call you, or send you written information.

Is this something you’d be interested in participating in?

If no: That's fine! We always are running more studies here at Duke CHILD Studies. Would you like to be called in the future when your child is eligible for another study?

If yes: Great! Like I mentioned, for this study, you'd send pictures of a few household items to our lab’s email address. If you would tell me your email address, I would be happy to email you the list of suggested objects to photograph, and then you could reply with the images.

Thank you so much. Remember to please center and focus on these objects when photographing them. The image can be taken on any device with a camera, including your phone.
