HPP setup

Details of the Bergelson Lab's Headturn Preference Procedure experimental setup

Computer: 2018 15” MacBook Pro (with 4 Thunderbolt ports)

Monitors:

  • 1 Toshiba 43 Class LED HDTV (center monitor)

  • 2 Sceptre E205W 20” LED Monitors (with HDMI and built-in speakers)

  • 3 HDMI to HDMI cables (2 40’ cables, 1 35’ cable)

  • 3 HDMI to USB-C adapters (3)

Camera:

  • 1 GoPro Hero 2018

  • 1 Micro-HDMI cable (included with GoPro)

  • 1 Micro-HDMI to HDMI adapter

  • 1 40’ HDMI to HDMI cable

  • 1 ViewSonic external monitor

  • 128GB SD card

Parent Masking Music:

  • 1 pair noise-cancelling headphones

  • 1 iPod Nano

  • 1 audio cord extender

Software: Habit2

Notes for using Habit2: In order to use Habit2 for a three-monitor HPP study, follow these steps to allow for left-monitor-only and right-monitor-only trials:

  1. Use Audio MIDI Setup on your MacBook Pro to combine all 3 monitors into one multi-output device.

  2. Create left-side-only and right-side-only audio stimuli files (we use Audacity).

Setup

  • Turn on all three monitors inside the sound booth

  • Turn on the GoPro located under the central monitor

  • Check GoPro output on the experimenter computer

  • Start Habit2 with experiment-specific settings

  • When coding the experiment, press the 4 key when child looks left, and 6 key when child looks right, release keys when child looks away. The bouncy frog will automatically appear on the central monitor. Press the space bar to transition to the next trial.
