Adding Notes to Parent Tiers

This protocol outlines the steps for supercheckers to add a "notes" tier to each parent tier (e.g., FA1) within an overheard speech file.

Add a New Tier Type (if not already present)

This step creates the ovs_notes tier type, which is necessary before creating individual note tiers.

1. Open the .eaf File: Open your .eaf file in ELAN.

2. Create a new Tier Types: In the toolbar, go to Type > Add New Tier Type…

3. Enter Tier Type Information: Provide the following details:

   • Type Name: ovs_notes

   • Stereotype: Symbolic Association

   • Use Controlled Vocabulary: none

   • Lexicon connection: [leave blank]

   • ISO Data Category: [leave blank]

   • Time-alignable: unchecked

4. Confirm: Click Add.

Add a New Note Tier for a Parent Tier

Repeat this step for each parent tier (e.g., FA1, MO1, etc.) for which you need to add notes.

1. Add New Tier: Go to Tier > Add New Tier…

2. Enter Tier Information: Provide the following details:

   • Tier Name: ovs_notes@Parent_Tier (Replace Parent_Tier with the specific speaker tier, e.g., ovs_notes@FA1)

   • Participant: Parent Tier Name (e.g., FA1)

   • Annotator: Your initials

   • Parent Tier: Select the corresponding parent tier from the dropdown list.

   • Tier Type: ovs_notes

3. Confirm: Click Add.

Important Note: The ovs_notes tier is an associated subdivision (similar to xds and cds). This means notes can only be added to segments that already exist on the parent tier. If there is missing speech that requires a note, you must first add a segment (or annotation) to the parent (transcription level) tier before you can add a corresponding note.
